Several residents have died after Covid outbreak at Callington care home

Several care home residents have died following a Covid outbreak in Cornwall.

Chyvarhas home, in Callington, has confirmed today (December 2) that there have been "a number of Covid cases" at the home and as a result several of its residents have sadly passed away.

The Cornwall Care care home's team is now "working tirelessly" to contain the outbreak and look after those who are still poorly while supporting the families of those affected.

A concern was raised by an anonymous relative this week who said she was "disgusted with how it is being handled" and accused the care home of "keeping quiet".

A spokesperson for the care home has since dispelled the claim saying that was never the case and the families of those affected have been informed all along and are being kept up to date with daily progress reports.

Cornwall Care CEO, Anne Thomas, said: “I can confirm there have been a number of Covid cases at our Chyvarhas home in Callington and several of our much-loved residents have very sadly passed away.

"Our team are working tirelessly to contain the outbreak and look after those who are poorly. This is a very difficult situation and our hearts go out to everyone involved.

"We are in constant contact with the families of those affected and are being supported by our local GP, health colleagues and the local community.”

Cornwall Care also confirmed that contrary to claims by the anonymous source, relatives have been very complimentary about the way the situation is being managed with lots of thanks being expressed to the team for all they are doing.

She continued: "It’s an emotional time for everyone and staff are doing their absolute best in very difficult circumstances."
